How to Declutter Part 1: Purging

One problem that frequently plagues ADHDers is clutter. It can be overwhelming to look at all your stuff in piles on the floor. This necessitates a tough, take-no-prisoners approach. Here are some tips to help you get rid of some stuff and have less clutter.

Force Yourself to Downsize

Your stuff will expand to the size room/house/apartment/dwelling you have. Seeing a blank space will make you want to put something there. The key, then, is to have a smaller space. If you live in a two-bedroom apartment by yourslef, move into a one-bedroom apartment. Have a big house? Move into a smaller one. These moves will force you to purge some of your things. A smaller dwelling is also less expensive and easier to maintain.

Be Ruthless

So, let’s say moving isn’t an option. What to do then? You have to be ruthless. Purge without giving much thought to the emotional attachment you have to items. Ask yourself, “How often do I really use this item?” If it is never or seldom, get rid of it! Be ready to have a trash can nearby when you are trying to declutter. Sometimes, the garbage is best route to go.

Ask Yourself Tough Questions

You need to ask yourself tough questions when decluttering. Questions like, “Would I rather have my life back or this thing?” can help you get into action and start purging things

Get Help

You do not have to do this alone. Another person can provide a useful, outside perspective on your clutter. Find someone who will also be non-judgmental. This could be a close friend or family member, or it could be a coach or professional organizer.

Coming Up in Part 2…

This week focused on purging everything you can eliminate. But, what about those things you just have to keep. We will discuss that next week.
