Book Review: Your Brain's Not Broken

Let me take you back in time. It is November 2018. I am attending my first International Conference on ADHD in St. Louis. I am socially awkward and unsure if I belong at this conference or in my new profession as an ADHD coach. One of the presentations I attend is on “the secret to time management.” Early on in the session, it is revealed that the secret to time management is energy management. The speaker, Dr. Tamara Rosier, then goes on to present her “Solve-It Grid.” This grid blows my mind. I go on to write a blog post about it and recommend its use to some of my clients.

Fast forward to 2021. I am casually checking my email to see a message from Dr. Rosier. I excitedly open it. In it, she tells me she has written a book and wants to send me a copy because of my enthusiasm for the Solve-It Grid. I accept her offer and anxiously await the arrival of Your Brain’s Not Broken: Strategies for Navigating Your Emotions and Life with ADHD. When it finally arrives, I read and enjoy it.

Now, let’s examine it more closely…

Serious and Funny

My favorite people are the people with whom I can have a serious conversation and with whom I can be goofy. Dr. Rosier achieves both in this book. The subject matter is handled with the truth. She acknowledges the hardships of having ADHD while sprinkling in some humor. The best example of the humor is the names of her chapters. She uses the chapter names of “Elves, Dirty Babies, and Lucille Ball,” “Following the Rabbit,” and “Solving Motivational Murders,” among others. I loved the chapter titles.

Wide Range of Topics

I cannot think of any ADHD-related topics that Dr. Rosier left out of the book. She covers the vast array of ADHD issues in a short, easy-to-read book. In short, if you are looking for an excellent introduction to living life well with ADHD, this is the book for you.

Call to Action

One of the most important parts of any book is the end. In her book, Dr. Rosier provides an ending that invites the reader to ponder what they have just read and how they are going to apply it to their life. It is not a book to set aside and never think about again; it is meant to be applied to your life.

Final Thoughts

While I enjoyed this book, I did feel like there was something missing. I like to highlight key points as I read a book, and I did not highlight much in this book. That may be because I was engaged with reading the book and following along with the stories. I may only be giving it four stars because I built up high expectations in my mind. Overall, this book is worth a read.
