What Is a Reset?

Reset ADHD is my coaching practice’s brand name. But, what does that mean? Well, the ADHD part is obviously because I specialize in ADHD. For the purposes of this blog post, though. I would like to focus on the “Reset” part of the name. It is, after all, the brand part of Reset ADHD. So, what is all this “Reset” stuff about?

The Origins of the Name

Okay, first of all, in the interest of full disclosure, I am not the first person in my family to use the name Reset. If you are looking for a chiropractor or a therapist in the Minneapolis area, I recommend Reset Chiropractic and Holistic Health. My sister is the chiropractor and my brother is the therapist there.

I took their name and applied it to my coaching philosophy. To explain this, I take you back to when my age was in the single digits. My brother and I would play sports games on the N64 together, and he would always win. By halftime, I would want to quit because he would be so far ahead. However, he would always use big-brother manipulation to convince me to keep going. As the second half went on, I would fall further and further behind, and the N64’s reset button became more and more attractive. If I hit the reset button, the system would turn off and reboot. This meant the game we were playing did not officially end. And, if the game did not end, I did not lose. You see, a reset isn’t a defeat; it is a refusal to accept defeat. My brother soon learned to keep me away from that reset button.

“Reset” Applied to Coaching

When hitting the reset button, on your ADHD/life/whatever, you decide to give yourself a fresh start. In a sense, you are saying “Today is not a continuation of yesterday’s failure.” So what if up until this point things have not gone your way? That does not mean that trend has to continue. It can be better starting now. Signing up for coaching with Reset ADHD allows you to hit the reset button and start again.

Strengths-Based Strategies

However, real restart involves using fresh, strengths-based strategies to overcome one’s challenges. On those rare occasions where I would get past my brother’s barricade and hit the reset button, my brother would make me play the game over again. However, I would squander the opportunity of a fresh start. I would use the same strategies I used before, and I would still lose.

When hitting the reset button, you want to make sure you are starting again with different strategies. If you continue to do what you did before, you will get the same results. By doing something different, you open the door to new outcomes. It is important for these strategies to be rooted in your strengths. When you choose strengths-based strategies, you increase the likelihood of them succeeding. If you use strategies that rely on areas of weakness, you will not have a firm foundation from which to build. Instead, pick a strengths-based strategy.
