For the past few weeks, I have been in a funk. I do not like being in a funk, yet here I am. While discussing this with my mentor, he came up with an acronym. G.O.O.F. Get Out Of Funk. The key to getting out of a funk is to G.O.O.F. around. Be a G.O.O.F.! I love this idea and am going to run with it. I pledge to be a G.O.O.F. while I am in this funk.

I think this idea can be helpful for others with ADHD. Sometimes, the ADHD can get to us, and we get down about our struggles. To all those in a funk, I say, “Be a G.O.O.F.”

Funks Take as Long as They Take

I am not expecting a miracle here. I know that this funk I am in will take as long as it takes. I cannot wave a magic wand and make it go away. It will take as long as it takes to run its course. If you are in a funk, know that this blog post will not cure your funk. It can help you endure and not make things worse.

Don’t Make It Worse

While we cannot make a funk better immediately, we can make it worse or even extend it. I made the mistake recently of spending a good portion of my weekend at home alone. This made my funk worse. I went from feeling mildly down and alone to feeling miserable and very alone. I did myself no favors. What I needed to do is be a G.O.O.F. A G.O.O.F. does not sit around the house doing very little. That only makes things worse. A G.O.O.F. jumps on the opportunity to do something new and exciting.

Put Something Aside for a Sunny Day

When something new and exciting comes along, a G.O.O.F. leaps on the opportunity. It may distract the G.O.O.F. for a while, and the funk may descend again when back to being alone. However, new opportunities come along when one has a G.O.O.F. mindset. These new opportunities create the chance to do something. By accepting what comes a G.O.O.F.’s way, the G.O.O.F. saves something for a sunny day. The new opportunity does not solve the funk, but it prevents an extension of the funk. Additionally, if one jumps at new opportunities, that creates additional opportunities. These new opportunities are perfect and create a better time when the sunny days return. It could even extend the sunny days.

I do not know how long this funk will last, or what I can do to be a G.O.O.F., but I will keep my eyes open for new opportunities. I might even revive some old opportunities. Who knows?! Being a G.O.O.F. does not conform to one set of ideas. It does explore everything and has fun while doing it. It is the improv mindset. G.O.O.F.s say, “Yes, and…” to life. That is what I pledge to do while in this funk, and I hope you will do the same.
