Overcoming Impulsive Spending

Impulsivity is one of the hallmarks of ADHD, and when it comes to shopping, impulsivity can be dangerous. Impulse shopping is one of the main sources of anguish for those of us with ADHD. Credit card debt can become a huge problem if you do not get impulsive spending under control. So, what is a person with ADHD to do?

Know Your Budget

Take the time to regularly examine your finances. How much is in your checking account? How much do you get paid? What will you need to spend money on later? Asking these questions and finding the answers will help you know what you have money to spend on and what you do not have money to spend on.

Interrogate Yourself Before Buying

Before you buy something, ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” Asking yourself this question will give you a second to pause and really think about what you are about to do. In that pause, you have the opportunity to examine the purchase and if it is something that you really need.

Don’t Shop While Emotional

Emotional regulation can be hard for those of us with ADHD, and emotions wreak havoc on our logic. We are not as rational when we are emotionally charged. When you are emotionally charged, it is much easier to say, “Oh, I need this $100 purchase.” However, if you wait until you have calmed down, it might not seem as much like a need as you once thought.

Don’t Shop While Hungry

This is a common piece of advice for grocery shopping. If you go to the grocery store while hungry, you are more likely to buy items you do not really need. Your mind is not at peak efficiency when you are hungry, and therefore, impulse shopping is more likely when you are hungry.

Medication (or Your Alternatives)

You will be less impulsive on your medication, so if impulse shopping is a problem, make sure you are remembering to take your medication. If you are not on medication, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep and exercise. Heck, even if you are on medication, make sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. These strategies will help keep your impulsivity in check.
