The Secret to Balancing Life

There are many aspects to life – play, work, self-care, etc. We need a balance of all to live a healthy life. It can be hard to balance everything, especially when one has ADHD. The hyperfocus caused by ADHD can cause one to be so preoccupied with one task that nothing else gets done. It can also cause one to forget about taking care of oneself. And, there are many other aspects of ADHD that are troublesome when it comes to balance. I am not here to list every possible way ADHD could get in the way of living a balanced life. I am here to give you one tiny little secret that will help you live a more balanced life.

The Secret

The secret to balancing is that no one is balanced. Everyone is off-balanced. Yes, some are more off-balanced than others, but those who appear to be perfectly balanced are, in fact, still off-balanced ever so slightly.

Let me use a metaphor to explain this. Stand on one foot. Notice how you stay up but are constantly making small adjustments. You are off-balanced, but you stay up by making tiny adjustments. You lose your balance even more when you try to make big adjustments.

What this all means is that you will probably never be perfectly balanced, but you can achieve more balance by continuously re-evaluating yourself and making small adjustments. It is about the small adjustments and the determination to regain balance when you notice that your balance is faltering.

I wish I could give you a better answer than to suggest that you make continuous, small adjustments, but that is the fact of the matter. Balance is about adjusting to the changing circumstances of life. That may seem daunting, but I have good news. You do not have to go it alone. There are people who can help you. I suggest working with an ADHD coach who can help you see the changes in your life and how you can adjust to them. I have found coaching powerful in my life, and if you are open to it, it has the power to change your life as well.

After observing O’Sensei, the founder of Aikido, sparring with an accomplished fighter, a young student said to the master, ‘you never lose your balance, what’s your secret?’ ‘You are wrong’ O’Sensei replied, ‘I am constantly losing my balance. My skill lies in my ability to regain it.’
