So, I’m writing this blog post. I don’t care one flying flip if it is good or not. I am just showing up and writing it. Curious as to why? I don’t care; I’ll tell you whether you are curious or not.

I Don’t Write Comedy

I do not write comedy. I don’t ever sit down to write a funny story or a stand up comedy routine. However, I am funny. I did improv in college, and I have been known to make funny comments in conversation. Yet, I cannot write comedy. I have found that, when I try to be funny, the humor is ruined. I am more funny when I let myself be in the moment, when I’m not trying to think of something clever to say.

Performance Anxiety

When you are worried about how you will perform, you won’t perform well. If you are trying to think of interesting things to say on a date, you are less likely to be interesting, and worse yet, you will not be listening to your date, ruining the conversation. If you are worried about performing well while acting in a play, you will be a nervous version fo yourself on stage, you won’t be in character, and you won’t perform well. Worrying about how you are doing at what you are doing will make you bad at doing what you are doing. Just do the thing. Take a page out of Shia LaBeouf’s book and DO IT.

The Lesson: Be in the Moment

What we can learn from all of this is: Be boring. Okay, not really. However, as I wrote this blog post, I did not worry about crafting creative sentences or expressing the most profound thoughts. I simply tried to write without worrying about how interesting I was being. I stayed in the moment, trusting that, when it came time to express a new thought, it would be there and it would be the right thought.

I don’t care if this post is boring, but let me ask you this: Were you bored while reading it?
